about
The storied SoHo Playhouse was one of the original venues for what is now known as Off-Broadway. From the Playwright's Unit, a writer's workshop led by Edward Albee that spawned the likes of Sam Shepard, Terrence McNally, Lanford Wilson and others through Tracy Letts' Killer Joe, Michael Laurence's Krapp39 and Baba Brinkman's Canterbury Tales, SoHo Playhouse has been synonymous with the movement that is Off-Broadway.

It has become increasingly difficult to nurture the kinds of plays and playwrights that made Off-Broadway one of New York City's most prestigious assets. High costs on all fronts have made experimentation nearly impossible. One by one, Off-Broadway venues have been succumbing to the ravages of time and economic reality.

SoHo Playhouse, Inc. is determined to keep Off-Broadway alive. Each year will see a faithful revival of one of Off-Broadway's seminal productions and will be paired with a new play by a new playwright. These new works will follow in the mold of what made the Off-Broadway sensibility what it is – creative, vital, experimental, emotional – tapping into what makes living worthwhile.

SoHo Playhouse, Inc. seeks to insure that the great adventure that is New York City's Off- Broadway remains a vital force in the fascinating, exciting and necessary world of the theater.
